Empowering Tendu Leaf Collectors: Enhancing Awareness and Motivation for Alternate Uses of Tendu Leaf in Central India
摘要
Introduction: The collection of Tendu leaves is a pivotal seasonal activity in central India, contributing US$2 billion annually to the economy, with 80% of the working population from women’s tribal areas. Despite its economic importance, this sector remains largely unorganized, primarily focused on Beedi production. In the last decade, there has been a decrease in Beedi production due to health awareness among people, government regulations on taxes, and socioeconomic shifts toward alternative products. Tendu leaves, categorized as a “non-timber forest produce” possess untapped potential beyond Beedi making. This study aims to assess the current awareness among Tendu leaf collectors regarding alternative uses and analyze the factors influencing their motivation in exploring these alternative avenues. Methodology: This study is divided into two phases: Phase I, is involved in data collection through interviews, direct observations, and shadowing to understand the activities of Tendu leaf collectors. In Phase II, the collected data was analyzed to identify core issues and define existing challenges. Insights of the study will help to generate a more user-centered approach in finding solution of the existing problem. Results: The insights from the study revealed that Tendu leaf collectors have limited knowledge about its alternative uses. Moreover, it was found that domestic applications of Tendu leaf, such as sustainable cutlery and potential medicinal uses for treating ailments, are relatively unknown. Further, the study examined the factors that impact the motivation to explore alternative applications. Conclusion: This study reveals a significant lack of awareness among Tendu leaf collectors regarding the potential alternate uses of Tendu leaves for expanding employment opportunities. Moreover, both private and government entities exhibit limited knowledge about the diverse applications of Tendu leaves. These findings underscore a substantial opportunity within this sector to innovate and develop new products utilizing Tendu leaves, thereby preserving existing jobs and fostering future employment growth.
