Cognitive Blossoms: Exploring the Perception of Naturalness in Design

This study investigates the perception of naturalness in computer-generated imagery (CGI), specifically focusing on the digital recreation of the lotus flower. Using a theoretical framework grounded in eight key perceptual parameters—lighting and shadows, surface smoothness and texture, colour and reflectance, geometric accuracy, motion, human visual system processing, noise and artefacts, and psychophysical factors—the research explores how these factors influence the perception of naturalness in CGI. A survey was conducted with 26 participants involving a set of digitally altered lotus images. Participants evaluated these images using a Likert scale, and a correlation matrix was developed to identify relationships between various perceptual parameters. The findings revealed strong positive correlations between surface imperfections, colour accuracy, and overall naturalness, while factors like lighting and symmetry showed moderate correlations. These results offer valuable insights into how digital representations can closely mimic natural forms, helping designers enhance the realism of their creations. The study underscores the need for further research with a larger sample size to validate these findings and refine the theoretical framework for assessing naturalness in CGI.
