Computer-Aided Ergonomics Evaluation of Floor-Mopping Activity Using CATIA Software

Floor-mopping is a part of our daily routine to maintain environmental sanitation. The cleaning workers involved in floor-mopping activity may face various occupational health problems, including the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). Therefore, the study aimed to examine the MSD problems of floor-mopping workers in university hostels and propose necessary measures from an ergonomics point of view. Forty-four floor-mopping workers who participated voluntarily in the study were interviewed using the Nordic musculoskeletal questionnaire, and the risk was majorly identified in shoulders (84.0%), neck (77.2%), and hands/wrist (75.0%). Further, the working postures of five cleaning workers in floor-mopping activity were photographed, and required body joint angles were measured from photographs using Kinovea V0.9.4 posture analysis software. Later, the captured postures were evaluated using Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) in CATIA V5 software and Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) worksheet. The results of RULA and REBA analyses revealed that the working postures of workers involved in floor-mopping activity were in high-risk conditions. Overall, the study findings indicated that MSDs are most prevalent among cleaning workers in floor-mopping activity, and solutions are required to avoid award working posture. Furthermore, the study findings have potential implications for the design of ergonomic floor-mopping sticks.
