Exploring the Practice of Digital Pattern Making and Virtual Garment Prototyping by Fashion Design Students

The growing demand for creating and manufacturing designer garments has seen the fashion industry welcoming digital platforms for design decision-making through virtual prototyping. In the current situation, technology is playing a major role in virtual collaborative idea exchange, thus expediting the turnaround time of design iteration to prototyping. Even though the digital method is more efficient and accurate we have always been skeptical about relying on these technologies and preferred a more tangible approach in garment making. This study explores the practice of digital pattern making and 3D visualization tools in the fashion design process and their impact on students’ learning outcomes. As traditional approach of garment designing requires a lot of tangible materials like drafting paper, cloth, trims, machines, workspace, etc. Which makes traditional learning approaches time-consuming, cost intrinsic, and waste inducive. Often compromising on creative exploration due to lack of 3D visualization competency of forms and fabrics etc. This research, conducted with undergraduate fashion design students, reveals promising insights into the benefits of digital pattern making and 3D simulation. The findings indicate that these tools enhance accuracy, reduce material waste, and support the creation of a robust repository of design resources. The study underscores the importance of integrating digital tools into the fashion design curriculum to prepare students for the industry’s digital transformation and promote sustainable design practices.
