This paper presents an illustrative approach toward architectural history performed in virtual reality, thereby diverging from conventional media such as novels, theater, radio, and film. The 360° spatial experience in virtual reality offers the possibility for individuals to walk around three-dimensional environments, by wearing a head mounted display. For this reason, the process of learning history could benefit through an immersive virtual reality experience. This study investigates twelve architectural monuments of Hyderabad city, dating back to the seventeenth century and its chronological evolution to the present day. The expressive illustration approach in this study is different from 3D simulations such as photogrammetry, laser scanning, and 3D modeling, where accurate measurements are taken into consideration to build architectural models virtually. Instead, the designer expresses the emotions of each monument through virtual brush strokes performed on Google Tilt Brush, supported with a voice over narrating the architecture influence in Hyderabad. A convenient sampling of fifteen viewers were asked to experience the virtual reality narrative. Post their experience, semi-structured interviews were conducted to understand the recall value of their immersive experience. The results validate that the immersive and experiential qualities of virtual reality were effective for an architectural narrative history on Hyderabad. This study unfolds the potential of illustrations in virtual reality toward history and architecture.
