Human-centric source (HCS) offers insights into behaviors, preferences, and needs through interactions and observations with stakeholders. Design-centric source (DCS) aids in identifying strengths and weaknesses of existing designs. The objective of this research is to compare these sources by examining their individual impacts on discovering pain-points and identifying needs. Data from a funded design project involving the development of a camera-holder for pediatric laparoscopic surgery is utilized to fulfill the objective. Pain-points are discovered through: (a) observations of surgeries and interviews with surgeons (from HCS), and (b) analysis of existing camera-holders (from DCS); needs are identified from the pain-points. The comparison of: (a) the criticality of pain-points, (b) the importance of needs, and (c) the impact score of needs, derived from HCS and DCS, indicates no significant differences. However, the impact score of pain-points from DCS is higher than those from HCS. These findings underscore the importance of both HCS and DCS in discovering pain-points and identifying needs, and call for further investigation.
