What will the interface of an artificial human womb look like? What will be the major parameters of food security strategy in 2050? How will the current discourse on gender fluidity transform society, and how will digitally addicted children shape and nurture the society of the future? These will be crucial concerns of the futures, shaped by current practices of our socio-technological systems. Design education is currently at an important transition point, influenced by advancements in technology, medical science, climate change, digital societies, gender fluidity, and more-than-human mindsets. Design education and current methodologies should be relooked, and critical approaches should evolve to address the new behavioral patterns that will shape tomorrow. This paper presents evolution of speculative design discourse as a framework of complex futures trajectories, and case studies of Critical Futures for Indian context. Actor-network theory as method presents the framework rediscovering patterns from past and present, and potential of emergent networks to impact the futures. Speculative design multidisciplinary approach is crucial for design pedagogy in studying the emergent patterns of complex socio-technological-political-economic subcultures.
