The paper investigates the often-overlooked domain of Ayurveda-related medical devices (ArMDs). Even though ancient Ayurveda scriptures reference over 120 devices and tools, for various functions and purposes, there is gross negligence toward researching their design evolution. In contrast, Modern medical device design has evolved significantly, driven by market trends, technological advancements, etc. and most of the devices fall into 6th evolutionary stage. In this study, Evolutionary product phase theory (EPP) using exiting methods and evolutionary product stages (EPS) using 10-point Likart scale, are applied to a select few ArMDs. The objective of this study is to determine if insights obtained by correlating identified EPPs with EPSs of medical devices, facilitate the generation of concepts that, compared to their exiting counterparts, resonate more strongly with Vaidya, adhere the principles of Ayurveda ideology, and are market viable. Thirty-six design students investigated select 7 distinct ArMDs through desk research. After application, the existing methodology for finding EPPs was found to be relevant for ArMDs, as most devices aligned with early EPPs such as optimization or itemization. Furthermore, most of the ArMDs were found to be in early stages of EPSs such as technology or appearance/aesthetics, indicating potential for advancement. After deriving the insights from the study, students adeptly identified strategic starting points for ideation and developed concepts. Consequently, domain experts accepted and appreciated the redesigned ArMD concepts and found them notably more market-relevant, focusing on essential design aspects and adhering to Ayurveda ideology than the existing counterparts.
