Pleasurable reading enhances communication skills, promotes overall well-being, fosters empathy, improves cognitive function, and contributes to satisfying relationships. Regular engagement in pleasurable reading is associated with reduced stress and depression, elevated self-worth, effective stress management, and improved sleep habits. Despite these advantages, the prevalence of recreational reading is declining, particularly among young adults who are more inclined toward daily social media use. While technology serves various informational and entertainment purposes, its influence has transformed reading habits, introducing a wide array of digital formats such as websites, e-books, and multimedia publications. Former avid readers are unable to rebuild and sustain a healthy reading habit due to the prevalence of distractions and busy lifestyles, difficulty in finding a peaceful environment to read, a lack of motivation, and challenges in finding suitable reading material which is the problem statement being addressed by this study. A “user-in-the-loop engineering process” (UILED) was undertaken in order to address this issue. Stakeholder interaction was undertaken at every stage to create a user-centric product. The design intervention proposed is a portable reading pod with AI assistance and a plugin for e-books. The AI assistant aids in habit tracking and providing smart suggestions to make reading more pleasurable and easier to approach.
