One key strategy in striving to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is to scale up successful interventions. In this chapter, we exclusively focus on technology-driven solutions aiming to achieve SDGs. Technologies can be harnessed in ways that have multiple impacts on different elements of the SDGs and the targets underlying these. This focuses on the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence in water resource management, innovations in desalination, and water purification technologies, as extensively discussed. Prescriptive approaches may have time-to-market delays in the authorization process and slow adaptation to new scientific and technical evidence. The regulation may require time-consuming regulatory processes for appeals, complaints, legal challenges, and amendments before it can be adopted. It is identified that government policies strengthen innovation and entrepreneurship and provide an enabling environment to harness the potential of technology in achieving sustainable development. A focus on technology governance for enabling responsible innovation in four research and innovation ecosystems in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America identifies precise regulatory approaches and multi-stakeholder and international cooperation requirements for vibrant technology development to contribute to the many and varied SDGs. In particular, technology should serve to eliminate poverty, reduce inequalities, and benefit local communities in a way that respects, protects, and promotes human rights and planet health through the use of sustainable water systems.
