Advancements in technology innovations and integration have the transformational power to tackle the root causes of many complex problems that the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were established to address. For every SDG, technological advancements have demonstrated the ability to address at least one of the specific challenges tied to these goals. Technology that is introduced with the goal of making international development efforts more impactful helps make them more efficient, creates greater visibility and transparency, and can lead to solutions that are more easily and equitably accessed by all. The resultant effect is a range of benefits for society, economies, and the environment, from progress in health and human rights to increased profits for smallholder farmers. With their focus on scalability, data-driven decision-making, and transformative potential, many of these enabling technologies lead to benefits for a wide range of SDGs. Renewable energy technologies improve health and education outcomes across the social sectors; water filtration technology impacts multiple SDGs, including both human health and climate change; and apps that improve learning outcomes have clear environmental and economic benefits demonstrated. Further, the enabling technologies touch on the foundational principles of sustainable development as well by contributing to a reduction in gender and income inequalities. Data and analytics tools have had a demonstrated impact on monitoring and evaluation efforts, leading to better and more informed decision-making.
