SDG 14 and 15: Life Below Water and Life on Land—Conservation Technologies

Healthy ecosystems provide a range of benefits and services including food, clean water, and clean air, and recycling and converting waste. According to the United Nations, deforestation accelerates climate change, destroys the habitat of thousands of species, and contributes to the extinction of animals and plants. More than one billion people rely on forests for their livelihoods worldwide. In 2019, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations estimated that if the current rate of deforestation continues until 2030, Earth would lose forest land the size of China. Land degradation, deforestation, and loss of biodiversity make the world less habitable for animals and humans. New conservation technologies are required to achieve the targets of SDGs. In some instances, this may involve monitoring marine ecosystems to provide data for decision-making, such as water temperature data and coral reef cover, as illustrated. However, it may also involve the development of gear technology tools for managing and conserving resources. A system that prevents undesired fish from being caught, reducing the bycatch of sharks, rays, and turtles and simultaneously improving the chance of survival if accidentally caught. These developments are in line with early predictions of the potential for machine learning to revolutionize the conservation movement, in the production of new big data, and improvements in spatial biodiversity monitoring.
