The relationship between the ideological direction of the academies and the pace of the demands of the times is worth considering, as the academies were always hosted by scholars far from political power in remote places. While serving as officials and running academies, Zhu Xi and others created a place of ideological belonging for themselves. The identity of being both an official and a teacher determined that the ideology of the academy could not be opposed to the demands of the imperial power system. The thoughts in the academy could also influence official scholars’ governance policies in a small area. The academy was subjected to suppression from rulers, primarily due to the personal impulses of those in power.
