Although the academies were places for disseminating Confucianism, their development process was closely related to Buddhism. On the one hand, establishing academies had a role in countering Buddhism. Confucian scholars established academies to promote Confucianism and resist the influence of Buddhism. The masters of Neo-Confucianism, who upheld the tradition and actively gave lectures, attempted to compete for the position of academic thought. On the other hand, in terms of organizational form and teaching methods, the academies actively drew on many practices of Zen Buddhism (禅宗), like learning from the barbarians and mastering their skills to defeat the barbarians. Not only in terms of specific systems but also in terms of site selection, the academies and Zen temples reflect a common approach.
