As an educational form, the Chinese classical academy originated from the private lectures of Confucian scholars in the early dynasties. However, the Chinese name “Shuyuan (书院 Academy)” of the classical academy was first used as an official institution during the Tang Dynasty (618–907), which mainly functioned for editing and compiling books. Also, during the Tang Dynasty, private “Shuyuan” emerged as a place for reading and collecting books. During the Five Dynasties period (907–960), the phenomenon of gathering students to study at private places gradually increased. The one who truly inspired the educational form of the classical academy in later generations and played an exemplary role was Dou Yujun (窦禹钧) and his academy during the Later Zhou period of the Five Dynasties.
