Ocean health and climate neutrality were discussed prominently at the Sustainability Research Biennial, as well as a side event of a public discussion organized within the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Bonn, Germany, in 2017. This chapter touches critically on both topics and expands on areas relevant to innovative approaches to addressing the interconnected challenges of climate change and ocean health. Specifically, this interdisciplinary sustainable technique focuses on ocean health and ultimately integrates interconnected aspects such as acidification, overfishing, eutrophication, and marine plastic pollution in more detail. Several international organizations in marine sciences and governance advise a drastic reduction of CO2 emissions, as it is believed this is required to preserve ocean and Earth system stability. Limited consensus, however, remains on how to proceed without further affecting marine ecosystems, industries, or communities in the relatively near future. This chapter further discusses the roles of different stakeholders and invites interested readers to follow up on specific interconnections as they prefer a holistic perspective. This perspective looks at “ocean health” as directly relevant to a sustainable future. Oceans constitute the habitat for the majority of living organisms, including single-celled plankton and complex life like fish, marine birds, and mammals. In turn, the sea provides more than 50% of atmospheric oxygen and is a major nutrient, and hence food, provider for the principal human food sources: land-based plants and animals. Thus, one task of an Anthropocene global society is to intentionally align itself with ecological systems to avoid detrimental effects resulting from the inevitable interactions of complex systems. One way forward, this essay suggests, is to argue for an integration of parallel, albeit conceptually discrete, mechanisms.
