Thus far, we have provided a comprehensive picture of cleaner wrasse MSR behavior. One fundamental element, however, remains unclear. That is, when exposed to a mirror, exactly when in the process do they achieve MSR? Researchers have been interested in understanding which animals are capable of MSR, but few have considered this more detailed question—the timing of establishing MSR. It has been previously assumed that MSR does not occur before a few days or a week of mirror exposure. We were interested in understanding exactly when MSR occurred so we made detailed behavioral observations to uncover this gap in our understanding. Surprisingly, we discovered that the timing of MSR occurred rapidly, with 12 to 50 min of mirror exposure, not days or a week! Amazingly, this rapid establishment of MSR occurs at a similar pace to that observed in mirror naïve humans.
