The complexities of global oil governance have transformed and led to an accelerated demand on Africa’s oil and gas resources. Russia’s offensive in Ukraine, the disruption of the nord stream pipelines and the persistent instability in the Middle East has widened the prospect for Africa as a viable alternative for global oil and energy solutions. In oil governance scramble, the African Union must ensure that Africa’s oil producing states avoid the so-called ‘resource curse’ through Agenda 2063, which is the African Union’s centenary developmental aspirations and persistent paradox where regions abundant in natural resources tend to underperform in various development metrics, such as economic growth, susceptibility to conflict, and political advancement. Considering that oil is a finite resource, it is essential to mitigate corruption and foster intergenerational equity, and drive economic development from oil sector dividends. The objective is to propose to the African Union through its Agenda 2063 to synergize policies of African’s oil producing states for regional cooperation as a strategic pathway for addressing the developmental challenges and to mitigate conflicts from the sector to achieve geo-political stability and its goal of silencing the guns. Also, this research proposes that the AU should practically deploy its initiatives on good governance, dialogue-centered conflict prevention, as well as the management and conflict resolution, with a view to silencing the guns. This study employs secondary data and qualitative methods to evaluate the complexes of oil governance in Africa and the trajectories in AU’s efforts to silence the guns amid the geo-political tensions from oil governance.
