The desire to silence the guns (STGs) and promote security in Africa is one of the key aspects of ‘2063 agenda’ for African Union. Using qualitative methods where critical philosophical interrogation of the existing literature was applied, this study examines the practicality of ‘silencing the guns in Africa’ through ‘hindsight’, ‘insight’ and ‘foresight’ capabilities. I argue that African Union needed to learn from the past to understand the contemporary security challenges in order to envision the future for STGs in Africa. Following this line of thinking, it was established that: first, the continuation of neo-imperial powers in the political and economic affairs of African states and the propagation of SALWs affect the implementation of STGs in Africa. Second, in terms of insights, the coordination challenges among the existing institutional and governance structures, lack of monitoring and evaluation apparatuses and low political support hinder the progress of STGs in Africa. Lastly, African Union requires foresight initiatives to clarify on the conceptualization to enhance the understanding of STG in Africa and promote collaboration among African Union member states. This implies that integrating ‘hindsight’, ‘insight’ and ‘foresight’ capabilities can enhance the ability of African Union to strategically manage security policy challenges and enhance the future outcomes of STGs in Africa.
