Below, crude drugs used as the components in 148 ethical Kampo products and OTC Kampo products (approved by Japanese Government) introduced in this book are summarized in the order of alphabet by Japanese pronunciation. The information for each item includes the names, origin, representative constituents, effects and principal Kampo formulas that contain it. The origin is according to the definition in the Japanese Pharmacopoeia Eighteenth Edition (shown as [JP]) or the Japanese standards for non-pharmacopoeial crude drugs 2018 (shown as [non-JP]) [1, 2]. The representative constituents are not pharmacologically active ingredients as described above (see Chap. 4 , Sect. 1.4 ), but these compounds are characteristically contained in the crude drug as the marker constituents. As for the effects, the specific effects are listed after the traditional taste and character [3]. As for the principal Kampo formula, the representative ones approved as ethical Kampo products are shown; the formulas approved only as OTC Kampo products are denoted in “etc.”
