This paper aims at evaluating how the Internet of Things (IoT) has improved ITS and how integration of IoT in ITS will shape the future of transport. This review also examines how IoT supports essential ITS functionalities; connected cars; smart traffic systems; autonomous cars; and smart transportation systems. Subordinate IoT technologies such as edge computing, 5G, artificial intelligence, and blockchain are discussed to analyze their capacity to transform data processing, real-time data communication, and security in ITS. Nevertheless, the realization of IoT-driven ITS is not without its issues—for example, data protection, scalability, and issues with infrastructural development. The focus case of this paper, and overall structure, documents existing and potential successful IoT-ITS applications and outlines the existing technical and regulatory considerations that will need to be met in further implementations. Opportunities, requirements, and implications of IoT for ITS development in transport also argue for a course for the pneumatic evolution to higher, mimics and greener ITS solutions.

摘要
