It is one of the urgent priorities to establish advanced breeding platforms for sustainable vegetable production in tropical regions. The overall goal of this project is to develop disease-resistant chili peppers and heat-tolerant tomatoes that can potentially improve productivity in Indonesia, one of the countries facing climate change in the tropical region. In addition, we will analyze the potential impact of new varieties for farmers, markets, and seed providers through socio-economic approaches. To accomplish these goals, our project is composed of four main research activities: (1) development of heat tolerant tomatoes through developing near isogenic lines (NILs), TILLING by sequencing platform and introducing genome editing technique, (2) development of anthracnose resistant chili pepper through collecting chili pepper germplasm in Indonesia, developing TILLING by sequencing platform using local varieties and evaluation and diagnostic techniques, dissemination of anthracnose resistant chili pepper developed by UNPAD, etc., (3) economic analysis and impact assessment evaluation of newly developed varieties through socio-economic analysis, and (4) establishment of the Center of Advanced Breeding Technique (CAB-Tech) to facilitate advanced breeding of tomatoes and chili peppers as well as other important vegetables such as strawberries, develop supporting and training program for local farmers, researchers, students, etc.
