Wheat Breeding and Improved Technology Dissemination in the Hot and Dry Agroecosystems of Sudan

Global warming is occurring faster than expected, and its negative impact on crop production is becoming apparent. The impact on wheat production worldwide, particularly in Africa, is significant. Therefore, the rapid development and dissemination of climate-resilient varieties and technologies are urgently needed. In this chapter, we outline the development and identification of high-temperature-tolerant wheat genetic resources from wild species, the elucidation of the loci for tolerance through genetic analysis, the application of marker-assisted selection breeding, and the elucidation of the tolerance mechanism through physiological and biochemical analyses of tolerant wheat lines. In addition, a multi-stakeholder innovation platform approach and strategic public-private partnerships have been adopted to quickly and efficiently disseminate improved varieties and technologies to beneficiaries, which resulted in the production of substantial quantities of high-quality seeds and the enhancement of wheat farmers’ productivity and profitability. These research and development activities were conducted in collaboration between Sudanese and Japanese researchers and other stakeholders.
