The twenty-first century has been marked by numerous viral disease outbreaks, including the devastating COVID-19 pandemic, alongside SARS, H1N1, MERS, Ebola, and Zika, each causing widespread illness and mortality. Historically, identifying novel pathogens was a lengthy process, often taking years or decades. However, advancements in molecular diagnostics have significantly shortened this timeline, enabling the rapid identification of pathogens within weeks. Molecular diagnostics has emerged as a pivotal tool in the identification and management of viral diseases, significantly enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of disease detection. This chapter begins with an introduction to the principles of molecular diagnostics, elucidating its importance in addressing the growing burden of viral infections globally and then explores the escalating trends of viral infections, emphasizing their socio-economic implications on public health systems and economies. It critically examines the limitations of conventional diagnostic methods, highlighting the necessity for molecular approaches that offer enhanced sensitivity and specificity. Various strategies for molecular diagnosis, including polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and next-generation sequencing (NGS), are discussed, along with current market trends that indicate a shift toward more integrated and accessible diagnostic solutions.
