This paper seeks to discuss the complex interdependence between border security, arms proliferation and activities that seek to eliminate the proliferation of guns in Africa especially within the context of silencing the guns within the context of the African Union’s Agenda 2063 “Silencing the Guns” initiative on the African continent. It looks into how the facade of open borders as well as nature of smuggling, small arms and light weapons (SALW) compounded conflict and insecurity in Africa. Through integrating theoretical literature and existing findings, this research aims at revealing enforcement explanations for arms proliferation with special reference to weak governance, corruption, and transnational crime. Evaluation of operation is performed in the African Union based on the criterion of examination both results and challenges, with reference to the AU Master Road map of Practical Steps to Silence the Guns. The study calls for enhancement of robust disarmament states, bolstering borders as well as regional cooperation in an effort to minimize the chances brought about by the existence of armaments. With a view of enhancing effective peacekeeping and thus facilitating arms control across the continent, policy recommendation is provided in the conclusion.
