Cochliobolus heterostrophus (Drechsler) Drechsler is a pathogen that affects various gramineous plants, though it is most commonly recognized as the cause of southern corn leaf blight (SCLB). Because of its economic importance, the SCLB disease is of considerable interest to researchers all over the world. The utilization of chemical fungicides has been a key element of the integrated management of the disease for maximum agricultural loss reduction. This can be achieved, among others, by preventing the development of pathogen strains resistant to fungicides. A comprehensive understanding of the fungicide resistance mechanisms, both at the genetic and molecular levels, is therefore very crucial. Although investigations leading to the clarification of biochemical or molecular mechanisms of fungicide resistance should be carefully pursued, elucidation of its genetic nature is the prerequisite to the effort. Information on the resistance to fungicide mechanisms is one of the keys to successfully managing the SCLB disease for sustainable agricultural production.

Cochliobolus heterostrophus (Drechsler) Drechsler is a pathogen that affects various gramineous plants, though it is most commonly recognized as the cause of southern corn leaf blight (SCLB). Because of its economic importance, the SCLB disease is of considerable interest to researchers all over the world. The utilization of chemical fungicides has been a key element of the integrated management of the disease for maximum agricultural loss reduction. This can be achieved, among others, by preventing the development of pathogen strains resistant to fungicides. A comprehensive understanding of the fungicide resistance mechanisms, both at the genetic and molecular levels, is therefore very crucial.
