Durability and Long-Term Properties of Concrete with SCMs and Coarse RCA

One of the most essential aspects for ensuring durability as well as sustainability of concrete lies in proper selection of construction materials and design which ensure a longer service life of the structure. Porosity and connectivity of pores essentially regulate the durability of concrete. As discussed before, the attached mortar layer in coarse RCA is porous, less dense and contains microcracks; this inherent inferiority poses a major concern for making durable concrete. This chapter focuses on durability, shrinkage, and creep properties of concrete when coarse RCA and SCMs are incorporated. Durability properties of concrete has been assessed in terms of permeability, chloride ion penetration, sulphate attack and carbonation etc.
