This chapter focuses on the sustainability concerns associated with the widely used construction material ‘concrete’. The gravity of this issue is further discussed using relevant statistics in a global perspective. In this context, green concrete is defined and several methods for enhancing the environmental sustainability of concrete production are explored. The scope of this book is limited to exploring recycling and reusing methods as one of the best possible ways for making sustainable concrete. Potential of alternative materials like coarse recycled concrete aggregates and supplementary cementitious materials is assessed with respect to strength, safety, and sustainability of concrete. We will examine concrete at several scales, ranging from micrometres to metres, encompassing both the microlevel and the level of structural components.
