The deforestation rate across the globe is expected to increase in 2022 as a result of human activities, particularly in areas managed by Indigenous peoples. Indonesia, which has the largest number of Indigenous peoples in Southeast Asia, is likely to be the most affected. This can, however, be contained in woodlands managed by customary law communities such as the Marga Sarampas Customary Law Community (MS CLC) in Rantau Kermas Village. This chapter explores the concept of collaborative action to promote the harmonization of forest protection with socioeconomic goals and objectives, within the MS CLC’s integrative framework for collaborative governance (IFCG). The chapter is based on qualitative case studies, and its outcomes are innovative in demonstrating the internal collaboration dynamics among community members. The values of local wisdom in protecting the customary forest are upheld through collaborative efforts such as mutual reminders, forest patrol activities, the equitable enforcement of customary law, and Kenduri Sako, an advisory ceremony. In a slightly different result from that seen in previous research, the chapter shows that the environmental benefit has a substantial impact on increasing member awareness of forest protection (through shared motivation and principled engagement), which is further reinforced by the leader acting as local law enforcer.

摘要
