Land transport and its diverse means are part and parcel of our daily lives. Public transport is dominated by buses and solo or shared transport is dominated by taxi or autos in context of Indian roads. The previous trend of individual taxi-booking from taxi stands is way surpassed by online taxi-booking with the ease of taxi-booking applications. In the past decade, availability of spectrum of taxi-booking applications to the users who want to ride a taxi with a single click on the smart phones has dominated the transport business. The pivotal feature of online taxi-booking application is ruled by user’s convenience and owner’s profit, the present scenario lacks economic, social and environmental sustainability to an alarming degree. The cosmic statistics of Indian population, roads and daily worth of taxi business echo that any up gradation will exponentially impact the stakeholders including riders, owners and the environment. The emerging era of smart city demands a smart community advocating the need of sustainable transport. This paper highlights need of sustainable transport in online taxi-booking by providing a comprehensive study on conventional taxi-booking applications and proposing a Sustainable Transport Taxi-booking Application for Roads (STTAR) that ensures cost-effective and fuel-efficient rides. The experimental study indicates that optimised travel distance and riders’ choice of nearest pick-up and drop-off points instead of doorstep leads to reduced cost. The pilot study to validate decrease in fuel consumption thereby reduction in carbon footprints is conducted through 50 rides by local taxis in the region of Chandigarh and Jaipur collectively. This is further supported with a survey feedback of 200 general riders for remarks on the ease of use, rating of riders’ preferences and relevancy of suggestion of pick-up and drop-off points. The reward model suggested for SSTAR ensures that the profitability from owner’s point of view is also enhanced.
