Evaluating Emotional Responses to Video Content and Their Impact on Viewing Intentions Using the Visual Analog Scale
摘要
This study explored the effectiveness of the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) in quantifying and evaluating emotional responses to video content and their impact on viewing intentions. A total of 98 students from Singapore (n = 27) and Japan (n = 71) participated in an online survey in which they watched a trailer for the animated series “Arcane” and rated their emotional responses and intention to watch the series using the VAS. The collected data were analyzed using violin plots, cluster analysis, multiple regression, and scatter plot visualization. The results demonstrated that the VAS is a precise method for assessing participants’ emotional states, with cultural differences influencing viewers’ responses and intentions. Cluster analysis revealed distinct subgroups within each sample, whereas multiple regression analysis established significant connections between excitement, joy, and viewing intentions. Scatter plots further illustrate the strong positive relationships between these variables. The findings emphasize the importance of evoking targeted emotional reactions, particularly enthusiasm and joy, in promotional content to enhance viewers’ inclination to watch a series. This research contributes to the growing field of VAS applications for assessing emotional responses and their implications for marketing and content creation strategies in the entertainment industry.
