In 2004, a Finnish study [1] investigated the prevalence of osteoarthritis in the carpometacarpal joint of the thumb among adults aged 30 and older. The research, spanning from 1978 to 1980, followed 3595 subjects over time, evaluating work disability and mortality. Findings revealed a higher prevalence of thumb carpometacarpal osteoarthritis in women, correlated with an elevated body mass index. No significant link was found with physical workload history. While advanced osteoarthritis predicted increased mortality rates in men, it did not predict work disability. In 2021, a meta-analysis [2] examined radiographic thumb base osteoarthritis in the general population, involving 16 articles. The study highlighted a greater prevalence in females, with rates of 5.8% for males and 7.3% for females at 50 years, escalating to 33.1% for males and 39.0% for females at 80 years. The odds of having radiographic osteoarthritis increased by 1.06 per year of age, with higher odds in females. This research underscores a robust association between age, gender, and the prevalence of radiographic thumb base osteoarthritis. Considering the challenges of an aging society, the prevalence of thumb pain related to degenerative pathologies is expected to rise.
