On the Contribution of Ramadan Fasting Month to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
摘要
Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is a period of profound spiritual significance for Muslims worldwide and is marked by fasting, prayer, reflection, and community. Beyond its religious dimensions, Ramadan offers a unique lens through which to explore the intersection of faith, culture, and global development challenges. This chapter examines how Ramadan’s observance aligns with and promotes the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through practices embedded in the observance of Ramadan, Muslims contribute to poverty alleviation, food security, health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, sustainable water and energy management, economic growth, resilient infrastructure, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities, responsible consumption, climate action, marine and terrestrial conservation, peaceful and inclusive societies, and global partnerships. This chapter demonstrates the potent influence of cultural and religious practices in achieving global development agendas. It underscores the potential for cultural and religious observances to aid in achieving these global objectives.
