This chapter covers an important emergency which is often handled by Emergency physicians alone because of the acute presentation and threat to life in the event of delay. However, it is incumbent on ENT surgeons to be aware of the various manifestations and immediate management of the condition, both of which are detailed here. The important history to be elicited with respect to ingested, inhaled, or contact allergens is described. The systematic examination of the skin, eyes, oral cavity, and airway is described. The standard criteria for diagnosis of anaphylaxis have been tabulated. The various otolaryngological conditions that can mimic acute anaphylaxis and the differentiating features are described. The stepwise management of a patient with suspected acute anaphylaxis along with the specific drugs with their doses has been described in detail. A flow chart for the management of anaphylaxis in children with child-specific drug doses is provided for ready reference.
