This chapter deals with neck trauma, a condition for which an otolaryngologist’s opinion is often sought. The chapter begins with a detailed description of the three zones of the neck. The history to be taken to enable localization of the sites of injury is mentioned. Subsequent systemic and local examination of the neck and associated structures like the larynx, laryngopharynx, cervical esophagus, and vascular structures are described in detail. The current method of eliciting hard and soft signs to identify vascular, esophageal, and airway trauma has been tabulated for easy reference. The need for radiology including X-rays, CT scanning, barium swallow, color Doppler, digital subtraction angiography, and CT angiography in specific situations is highlighted. The immediate management of a case of suspected neck trauma is described in detail. The special steps to be followed in patients with open and closed laryngeal trauma has been described and illustrated with clinical photographs and scans.
