Design with Human depicts the essence of the human-centric approach as a paradigm for low carbon-oriented design and building operations in the information technology and data science era. Drawing knowledge from sensing and data management with, preferably, artificial intelligence, the paradigm focuses on the significance of deriving new views for building design and operations from not only human functional requirements but well-being and habitual aspects of response, preference, behavior, and so on, based on the group or personal basis. This is a different concept from ergonomics since it deals with the response, preferences, and even habits of user or users. For instance, such newly derived knowledge has enabled scientists to develop new concepts, such as personalized comfort as a new way of building environment control and design. Efforts in techniques and experiments carried out at teaching and research laboratories in recent years yield interesting results. For example, drawing from works by nursing and IT experts, the authors have ventured into experimental research engaging specific user groups such as elderlies of varying dependence or independence, office workers, and young adults (university students) in order to derive insights on viable practices on the creation and management of spaces, indoor or outdoor, that promote well-being, comfort, safety driven by user preferences. The objective is that such new knowledge enables one to design or manage their own buildings according to personal or group preferences over time. Accordingly, the Chapter postulates that it will be possible to interact with building users with the potential to change their behaviors for the sake of sustainable and low carbon goals.
