Solar Photovoltaic Networked Microgrid Design and Operational Performance Measurements

Microgrids are becoming increasingly popular as a viable option for meeting the energy needs of a modern civilization that is also highly integrated with digital technology. It is anticipated that the power distribution systems of the future will be more adaptable and intelligent than the ones that are now in place. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the methodologies for calculating power requirements and sizing solar microgrid networks. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of solar photovoltaic technology in microgrid operations, simulation models of the proposed microgrid systems are created using MATLAB/Simulink. A four houses microgrid network design and accurate power calculations were achieved. The number of photovoltaic (PV) panels calculated to be 35, 30, 28, and 23 for the four houses respectively according to the evaluation of the power usage and requirements for every house with a 30% safe margin. Simulation results illustrate the successful generation of the PV module output DC powers, currents, and voltages, meanwhile a 200–220 V AC current generated successfully as well from the designed PV based microgrid system.
