This chapter critically re-evaluates a selection of the themes that emphasized the interpretive dimension of doctors’ experience, and explores their relevance for doctors’ work in the Hong Kong public hospital. The chapter will discuss four strands that relate several themes together: work as a public good, work as part of communities, doctors’ negotiations of the ideal of the “good” doctor, and an ethics of care predicated on empathy and emotion. The selection of these four strands was based on their alignment with the study’s approach and objectives of focusing on subjective meaning-creation in doctors’ public hospital work.
