This Introduction lays out the study’s background, research aims, and rationale. Using collected interview narratives, this study explores how public hospital sector doctors in Hong Kong understand their work and careers, and the meanings and values they construct and ascribe to these. The Introduction situates the study in the context of Hong Kong and in existing literature on the use of narrative in the medical field. The use of interview narratives, instead of other types of data, is crucial to this study’s examination of doctors’ experiences and struggles in their particular work context. The Introduction argues that this has educational value for a wide variety of audiences.
