Health Literacy
摘要
Health literacy is the ability to obtain, process, and understand basic health information to make informed health decisions. It is considered very crucial for individual and public health outcomes. It comprises a wide range of skills, including reading, numeracy, and communication. Also, it influences a person’s ability to steer through the healthcare system, manage chronic diseases, and engage in preventive health behaviors. Low health literacy is associated with poorer health outcomes, higher hospitalization rates, and increased healthcare costs. Populations that are at risk for low health literacy include older adults, minorities, and individuals with lower socioeconomic status. Improving health literacy involves simplifying health communication, using plain language, and incorporating visual aids. Healthcare providers play a crucial role by evaluating patient’s health literacy levels and tailoring their communication accordingly. Incorporating health literacy into public health policy and education is necessary to address this issue comprehensively. Enhancing health literacy can empower individuals, reduce health disparities, and improve overall public health.
