Many biologists believe that the Earth is currently experiencing an unprecedented mass extinction event. According to statistical analysis of the extinction rate of modern organisms, extinction rates of major modern vertebrates are more than 50 times higher than normal extinction rates (Barnosky et al. 2011; Ceballos et al. 2015). Whether the sixth mass extinction is coming, the prediction of its time and its impact on the Earth’s ecosystem are a hot area in current research. There have been five mass extinctions in the geological past (Raup and Sepkoski 1982). Studying mass extinction events in the geological past therefore is valuable in dealing with the sixth mass extinction. In fact, research on “Big Five” mass extinctions has long been a hot topic in geosciences (Ravelo et al. 2004; Rong and Huang 2014; Bond and Grasby 2017; Shen and Zhang 2017).
