Increase Disaster Data Linkages by GLIDE

In dealing with disaster data and databases, several problems have long been recognized such as inconsistent definitions and classifications of data, data collection methods across databases, and accessibility to data. This presentation depicts the current situations and challenges of disaster data and introduce GLIDE, Global unique disaster IDEntifier, as a solution to these issues to facilitate disaster information management and increase data linkages. Asian Disaster Reduction Center (ADRC) proposed a concept of GLIDE, which gives common but unique numbers to disasters all over the world in 2001, The GLIDE system, which aims to promote the disaster information sharing among databases developed by a number of relevant stakeholders, has been maintained and operated by GLIDE partner organizations since its establishment. A GLIDE number is composed of disaster classification (24 types), year of occurrence, serial number and country code. Once a disaster occurs, an operator of GLIDE partner organizations issues a GLIDE number through GLIDE website, the GLIDE number appears on GLIDE website and also is automatically emailed to some 2,000 subscribers. The users apply the GLIDE number to databases and products, linking to other relevant data with the same GLIDE number. Facing the global initiatives and implementation of the targets like SDGs and SFDRR, there have been increasing needs in establishing national disaster databases for reporting in recent years. With the development of GLIDE API in 2021, GLIDE can further facilitate disaster data integration among various databases of all disaster phases. Thus, it can contribute not only to solving the above-mentioned challenges but also to assisting disaster database linkages, resulting in better disaster data management. While data integration through GLIDE are active among international and regional organizations at this moment, the concept of GLIDE can also be applicable to national and local database linkages.
