Considering only the human fatalities, the hydrological disasters that occurred in Petrópolis city (Rio de Janeiro state) in February 2022, in the Metropolitan Region of Recife in May and June 2022, and on the north coast of São Paulo state in February 2023, could be considered the largest disasters in Brazil in 2022 and 2023. Therefore, this study aims to highlight the main characteristics of these three hydrological disasters and to propose important lessons that Brazilians and their society should learn from them. The current problems in the integrated disaster risk management in Brazil, both in terms of local populations and public institutions, are fundamentally due to a deficient system of Disaster Risk Reduction Education. For developing this type of education, it is essential to establish school catchments and utilize them through citizen science. Furthermore, given the changing types of disasters, it will be increasingly necessary to pay special attention to disasters occurring in mountain regions where landslides, debris flows and flash floods are frequent.
