The Global Alliance of Disaster Research Institutes (GADRI) is a collaborative platform of 212 disaster research institutes worldwide. The questionnaire survey was conducted targeting member institutes with the aim of identifying the benefits and gaps of GADRI membership and the contributions to the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. The survey responses from 85 institutes shows that more than 5,000 professors and 30,000 students are involved in the disaster related research and education. Gender ratio of professors by region indicates the strong tendency in Japan that the professor positions are dominated by male. While GADRI acted as a node for networking member institutes and contributed to promote collaborative research and exchange among researchers, and making one-voice of member institutes, further needs to improve the accessibility to different types of disaster related data were identified. Majority of the institutes participated in the national, regional and local disaster risk reduction platforms to contribute in particular to drought and flood modeling, capacity building, early warning and cultural heritage management.
