During the 6th Global Summit of GADRI held in March 2023 in Kyoto, the Committee on Science and Technology (S&T) Roadmap organized a session on March 15th. This session was chaired by professor Hirokazu Tatano on behalf of Prof. Khalid Mosalam and Co-chaired by Toshio Koike, Selim Gunay and Yuki Matsushi. The session focused on the S&T Roadmap’s possible contributions to increasing the understanding of hazards, as well as technologies that help mitigate their negative consequences. Two main questions were addressed including 1) How to enhance the Science and Technology roadmap? and 2) How should we proceed with the Science and Technology Roadmap? Six panelists were invited to address these questions from diverse perspectives. Highlighting the importance of the relationship among different stakeholders, data sharing and understanding risks, with the role of a facilitator, to enhance sustainable development and resilience. Yet, community involvement and behavioral change are essential for strengthening DRR. Experts also mentioned that the Science and Technology roadmap should consider research innovation, policy, and planning, pilot projects, capacity building, and collaboration by touching upon ecosystem-based resilience. Furthermore, the S&T roadmap should also consider pathways to transfer science and engineering into climate actions as well as innovative resilience projects that determine the investment in key areas of research. Another perspective features the extreme events research and reconnaissance as crucial for DRR and the need for an interdisciplinary approach. The discussion focal point stated that the GADRI Science and Technology Roadmap will aim to promote sustainable and disaster-resistant society through shared vision, partnerships among academic disciplines, and data collection, analysis, and prescription. It will emphasize the importance of collaboration for effective solutions and sustainable development.
