Innovative Elicitors in Plant Science

The study of plant elicitors, substances that induce or enhance the production of specific compounds in plants, has significantly advanced with the advent of novel technologies and emerging trends. Elicitors are classified into abiotic and biotic categories and interact with plant receptors to stimulate stress responses, leading to increased biosynthesis of secondary metabolites. Recent developments in nanotechnology have introduced innovative elicitors, such as nanoparticles, which offer enhanced efficiency in secondary metabolite production. In agriculture, nanotechnology transforms crop management through nanoformulations, nanosensors, and advanced genetic engineering, aiming to improve productivity and sustainability. Furthermore, metabolomics and proteomics provide deep insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying elicitor responses, revealing how elicitors impact plant defense mechanisms and secondary metabolism. These omics-based approaches are instrumental in understanding the intricate interactions between elicitors and plants, leading to potential applications in enhancing crop resilience and productivity. This chapter explores these advancements and their implications for future research and practical applications in elicitor studies.
