Alginate based hydrogels shows water holding capacities and is used as a water reservoir for agricultural applications due to its unique chemical composition and structural characteristics. Sodium alginate-based hydrogels were prepared by adding nano cellulose, diammonium phosphate, and urea using calcium chloride as cross-linking agent. The hydrogels formed were characterized using FT-IR spectroscopy, and evaluated their swelling behavior, water holding capacity, nitrogen, phosphorus and urea release, water retention and biodegradation.
