This research paper delves into the nuanced role of visible light in design, especially in industrial product design, and how it manipulates a product in the eyes of the users. Visible light, the magical electromagnetic radiation that we’re all very much used to, and often take for granted, is quite complex. In industrial design, this visible light plays probably the most important role in how a product is perceived by people. However, it is not just any light that does the trick. Various types of lights are employed to bring out the true essence of the product. All of these vary in multiple factors such as color temperature, spread area, power. As much as light plays a crucial role, the shadows created also go together with the light to give us indirect, but controllable design elements. These “soft” design elements make up a huge part of how people perceive a product, irrespective of whether they know the effects of light and shadow. There is considerable research showing the prowess of using the right light and inducing the right shadows, however, emphasis is on large structures like architectural creations. This paper attempts to capture the effect of different types of light, different attributes of light, and different effects lights have on the CMF and form/shape of objects of human scale through “descriptive research” with a focus on survey-based perception analysis using a simulated real-time testing setup and user surveys. The results and inferences from this paper can be taken as recommendations for designing, creating, and bettering realistic photo studios and rendering studios. They can be considered for potential use in academia as well.
