Symmetry and asymmetry are two theoretical concepts of science and mathematics. Symmetry provides structure, well organized, and simplification for a crowd of complex, which is considered as an unrelated phenomenon across many disciplines of art. However, the attractiveness of symmetry is as a concept, mathematically fascinating, it is also considered that it has emotionlessness, rigidness, fixity, and stasis, which is less interesting, less attractive, and indeed gives less aesthetic pleasure compared to asymmetry like a passport photograph compares to person’s portrait photograph. It can give a sense of stability, which may be less captivating and aesthetically pleasing compared to the dynamic and unpredictable nature of asymmetry. This research explores the use of symmetry in cinematography in animated films, focusing on a case study of how Pixar animation studio employs this technique to elicit emotional responses from their viewers and foster a sense of empathy toward the characters depicted on screen. In this study, the sequence of shots from the two animated feature films “The Incredibles” and the “Ratatouille” created by Pixar Animation Studio were under scrutiny. This study examines how a sequence of symmetrical shots allows the audience to connect with a character’s circumstances, while the introduction of asymmetry within the composition of these symmetrical shots serves to generate interest, excitement, and skillful manipulation of changes in camera perspective, thereby ensuring an optimal level of satisfaction among the viewers. Educators can enhance students’ understanding by incorporating practical exercises that focus on symmetry and asymmetry principles in cinematography.
