Evaluation of the Effect of Using Figures of Speech (FoS) Card Tool on Creativity in Product Form Ideas
摘要
Ideation is one of the activities performed in the early phases of the design process. During the ideation stage, designers frequently encounter a cognitive obstacle when it comes to generating creative product form ideas. In such situations, ideation techniques such as the figures of speech (FoS) Card Tool can be used to generate novel product forms. The FoS Card Tool uses associations between figures of speech in the English language and product design to create unique product forms. The current research presents a series of controlled tests that assess the effect of using the FoS Card Tool during product form ideation on creativity. We conducted investigations with fourteen postgraduate students of design in product form ideation tasks. The ideas generated by these participants were evaluated by five expert designers using the Consensual Assessment Technique (CAT) for the creativity assessment. Our findings demonstrate that using the FoS Card Tool significantly enhances a designer’s creativity.
